An Interview with Melek.
Interviewed by Sharon
Melek is a young Turkish woman who lives with her husband in Lancaster. Her husband runs a take-away restaurant and at the time of interview she was expecting their first child.
I am from Turkey...My husband is a Turkish guy, he works night time. Night time people are different my friends say .... mainly drunk people coming to our shop. He has a take-away shop and then drunk people use really strong language talking about...sometimes I visit him; I saw all things and them drunk behind talking terrible ..........
... but I like the day people, because they are very, very different: not drunk and are smiling. If I want some shops they try to help me. As I speak not very well but they try to help me some problem of something. They explain it smiling and say 'hello',' good bye,' 'please'. They are nice to talking and I am happy after that because...... I like Lancaster, it's a small town I don't need a taxi; small and friendly people.
Teenagers groups very dangerous...Groups yes: if some teenagers, groups, are talking to each other I change the road ... because I am not frightened of all people but I am scared, just maybe joking blah blah but I am scared, they drunk a group not safely. I think their parents break up, grown up alone, I think England (has) family problems; they live in council houses. Council house people [are] different, definitely. Council houses' little young groups, I think they are very dangerous.
...I think no matter where you go, to which country you go, the situation is similar I think in Poland and Turkey.
